Cleaning Up

Clean up, clean up,
everybody, everywhere....
Clean up, clean up,
everybody do your share!

~ Barney the Purple Dinosaur

Unlike a lot of moms raising
little ones in the 90's and first
decade of the 21st century, I
was NOT a Barney snob.

You know the ones.  They'd
roll their eyes and declare that
their children {or, when I have
kids....} would never watch a
non-animated TV show
hosted by some guy in
a dinosaur outfit.

They were definitely missing
the point of the show, which
focused on things such as using
your imagination, good manners,
cooperation, acceptance, a thirst
for knowledge, kindness to others,
and collaboration, among many
other wonderful themes.

My daughter, especially,
loved Barney.

While the catchy tunes that helped
to reinforce many of Barney's
lessons no longer fill the rooms
of our home, if I happen to
hear them somewhere else, I'm
amazed how I can still sing

every
single
word.

One of them is the Clean Up Song,
which I'm not ashamed to admit
I still hum under my breath when
I have a mess to tackle.

Since the calendar flipped to a new
year, I've been tackling closets,
drawers and other junk-attracting
areas of our house with abandon.

We moved here 13 years ago,
and while {thankfully!} I was always
good at passing along the kids' clothing
as they were outgrown, other areas
weren't met with such diligence,
or if they were, it didn't last.

Like so many people, I've started
many years determined to
purge and get organized, with the
goal of attacking the entire house,
from top to bottom.

But usually, I burned out on
that mission fairly quickly.

But this year's been different.

By my estimate, I'm nearly
halfway there.

And it's still February!

I think the awesome team at the
Goodwill drive-up which I frequent
have begun to recognize me, after
all the boxes, bags and other things
I've rolled in with recently.

As Martha would say,
It's a good thing.

And like a proud momma who keeps
sneaking into her baby's room to
catch a peek at her pride and joy, I
find myself opening the spaces where
I've conquered clutter to simply
relish the order that lies within.

I'm also in the middle of cleaning
up my blog page*.  I've wanted
something less jumbled and a bit
more restrained for a while now,
so the focus can be on the words
and pictures.

Like my {previously chaotic} junk
drawer, it's a work in progress,
and I am enjoying the process.

In the meantime, I'll be your
tenacious friend, cleaning out
cupboards with  the song
of a purple dinosaur
in her heart ~

and sometimes, on her lips : )

Hello! Oh is this something I relate to.
I love your floral dust pan :)
My children watched Barney and yes, I still hum that song sometimes when I'm cleaning up.
Happy organizing..and all the best.

I just donated a ton of Barney DVD's to Goodwill! lol I am so with you, I know all the songs as well:) My kids watched a lot of Barney, although if you ask my 14 year old now she'd roll her eyes and say, "Me? Barney? No way!" Love your new look. I have been wanting to re-do my blog's look for like, forever. Maybe there's hope for me yet.

I love that song and we sing it frequently to our grands! We are in the middle of a whole house purge too. WIth my husband's recent retirement, I am looking at things with a new eye. We still have way too much STUFF, but it is going, slowly.
It's a process.

{love the new blog look, but the pictures opened too large for me ~ might just be my computer}

Thanks, ladies! And Sue,
I'm still fiddling with the
new look and working out
the kinks, including picture
sizing, so it wasn't you ~
it was me : ) xo

I can relate to the New Year purge plans - I'm still at the burn-out before the end of January stage. Hmmmm, must try harder!

So excited for you getting so orderly and tidy. :-) It's such a good feeling, isn't it? I hope to do the very same thing starting this week. :-)

It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since I heard that song several times daily!! Those days are cherished.

I had good intentions to tackle a ton of clean up/organization jobs when the new year came. I had been on a roll all during the fall. Somehow I lost my mojo after the holidays. But I am determined to get my goals accomplished by spring so I can live outdoors without guilt!

BTW, are you sure that's not my drawer you cleaned out? I'm going to go check!

XO,
Jane

P.S. I hope cleaning up your blog means you will be posting more often. :)

I am singing that song again! I can hardly believe it myself! But it trips from my tongue when there's a mess to be dealt with.

I love your new header.

Oh how beautiful your blog looks Suzanne! I love it! So peaceful and serene, the perfect backdrop for your photos and the art of your words!!

Good for you on purging and organizing. Feels so good doesn't it? I am due for a bit of a house purge as well.

Clean up clean up everybody everywhere! Sometimes my eldest busts out with that line when I am making him clean his room :)

OH Suzanne! I love your fresh look! Isn't it fun playing with it? I'm plugging away here, too...cleaned out two boxes of stuff!

My CC loved Barney but she was partly deaf and we did not know it so she called him MaMu. Even after she had tubes placed in her ears she still called him that name. I wish I could clean with your zeal. I have too many distractions now.

Oh my goodness! I thought I was in the wrong place for a second;) This new format looks great Suzanne. Is this Wordpress? I've heard it's a challenge to work with.. Hope all is well! xxL

Wow! Love the new look! Love the de-cluttering life, too!

I must admit, though...Barney was banned in my house. Not because I am a snob, but...frankly, because he creeps me out. Hope you don't hold this against me! :)

Loving the goal of simplification...

Along with my (yet another) blogging hiatus it seems that blog reading has become less frequent. SO I am just getting around here to this BEAUTY-ful space of yours! I love the post...and seeing how diligent you are with your cleaning out. I'm doing a bit of the same, but I'm not coming along quite as nicely as you. However, I shall continue to plug along. ;) I also love the new look of your blog! I can tell you are having fun...and that is what it should be. Praying I reach that level once again.

Your blog is looking so fresh and pretty! I love purging and organizing and even here in Dubai, it's surprising how much clutter starts to accumulate! I think I should tackle a bit of spring cleaning myself!

Gosh you are good. I desperately need to do the same, the clutter is weighing the house down... me down. Thank you for the inspiration to start something!

In my days of child sitting, the big purple dinosaur still shows his friendly face, and I too agree that he teaches some great lessons.

Cleaning and organizing I find therapeutic. Looks like you are doing a great job! Hum away...Barney would feel honored:)

Suzanne! I am going to need to subscribe by email because I have been having a very SICK blogroll that will NOT bump up new posts for certain blogs!

Your new blog look is FABULOUS! I LOVE IT! Your message is so important, to never miss the point of what may seem strange on the surface to some; I LOVED BARNEY, though I was already an adult when he came out on the scene!

I will subscribe now to your blog since I've had to do that with many of my favorites.

What a winter, huh? I am so ready to do my own CLEAN UP around here! Thank you for visiting. Anita

i remember CLEARLY singing barney aloud in the car with the {gasp} cassette tape running.... only to arrive to my destination and realize there were no kids in the car... {blush}

we loved barney, too. especially when i realized barney was a great babysitter when i wanted to steal a shower.

love the design changes-it's gorgeous, and you've accomplished your mission of being able to draw our attention to your pictures and words.

not that that was EVER a problem for me here.
