The Season for Growing Young

So much about the
summertime season
brings out my
inner child.

The thwack! of
a bat when it makes
contact with a
baseball.

The slam of a
wooden screen
door.

The taste of a
juicy, ripe peach.

The softness of
the morning air
before the day
heats up.

The dit-dit-dit
of the sprinklers.

The joy of watching
a seed become a
seedling.

Bare feet on
cool grass.

Thunderstorms.

Porch swings.

Root beer floats.

I was watching
a video blog a
few weeks ago
and the blogger
reminded viewers
that when we were
little, we would
proudly announce
that,

I'm six and half,
but soon I will be
seven!

And you were very,
very excited at the
prospect of becoming
older.

She pointed out that
it would be oh-so-cool
if we heard adults
say,

I'm 36 and a half, but
soon I will be 40!

embracing our wisdom
and the prospect of
a new season of life.

That's how I feel about
the summer; it makes
me grow younger, at
least for a few months,
as I celebrate the simple
pleasures that seem to
abound at this time.

It's May 18th,
but soon it
will be July 4th!

I have already warmed
the bleachers at 10 baseball
games, often viewing the
sun setting below the
horizon. The lights, the
cheering, the scent of
popcorn wafting on the
breeze, take me back to a
time when life seemed
like nothing but a giant
possibility.

What summertime
joys make your
heart
sing?

Can you feel
yourself,
growing
younger?

xo

Barefoot in the grass, sunshine in your soul...it's all here again. I'm embarking on my 55th summer, and it never gets old...so I can't either! I love the picture of you & your mom. Such love in your eyes. You are blessed.

Oh- Suzanne- I love this post. I always feel younger in the summer, too. My mind floats back to the lazy days of youth when a good book and an apple were I needed to spend the afternoon sitting on a big old tree limb.

We will be watching soccer matches as our little SweetCheeks has decided that is her sport of choice. (she's only 5) and her Mom, my oldest dd, plays softball so we watch that.

That last picture of the two of you on the porch is just a wonderful portrait of two beautiful generations. Love it- xo Diana

yes yes yes younger. oh the thwack. suzanne, i miss it so much. they frolf now, and it's a silent sport. for me, it's the simplicity of the sun on my face. the smell of the fresh herb plants i will place in the dirt tomorrow. and a craziness in the warm air that leads me to believe IT COULD HAPPEN. IT COULD. i want it to be summertime in my soul all year round!

When my husband and I put an addition on our house a few years ago we put a wooden screen door on the porch. Our contractor thought we were crazy, but we told him we wanted to hear that "thwack!" of the door as kids ran in and out. Our neighbors probably hate it, but we love it!

Wonderful, wonderful post!

Oh I love the feelings and thoughts that summertime brings to the surface in my life too. I think it's one of the reasons I would love to move somewhere warmer...I feel like I would enjoy life a little more :)

A lovely post to read as we go into our southern winter. We are just experiencing the first winter blast fom the south pole, a drastic change after a prolonged and balmy autumn. But it makes us appreciate the summer all the more.

Our season doesn't seem to want to arrive this year, we seem to be stuck in a groundhog day of dullness. However when the sun does arrive we will all be out to play and our inner child will shine through.

Absolutely. I have said that I am not growing old, I am growing up. Wisdom and more experience are wonderful things to EMBRACE and yet CREATIVITY KEEPS ME FEELING LIKE A CHILD. Summer as a teacher has always been an opportunity to SLOW DOWN and observe more and whenever school would start up again, that FIRST WEEK BACK I always wondered why I felt like a kid again....VOILÀ....it is because I stopped long enough to enjoy the pleasures of the season.

HAPPY DAY DEAREST! Anita

I make sure we are always in the US for the 4th - my very favorite holiday! Summertime is mourning doves, locusts, June bugs, and fireflies. Lawn mowers and sprinklers too!

I love your photos. In preparation for a nice summer on my patio and garden I"m cleaning the patio and porches. I am looking forward to sitting outside in Holland which it has been too cold to do on our patio so far. We have installed the heater. Next weekend we'll try it out for sure. It's Enno's 79th bday! Let the summertime begin! xo Jenny

I agree, summer makes me feel younger too. And the sound of a wooden screen door is the ultimate summer joyful sound. I also feel younger when I see lots of green grass in the summer(something I miss very much because here in CA everything turns brown in the summer). And, we can't forget the wonderful sound of the Good Humor truck...that was always a favorite!
Have a wonderful weekend. XO

Summer is dappled sunshine through the swaying branches, bare feet, cold drinks on a blanket on the lawn, catching fireflies, sitting around the fire pit and listening to the popping of fireworks on the 4th! Something I now feel very lucky to experience here in the States! Lx

I love spending time on our screen porch. On a hot day, I can go oout there and the SMELL of the wood in the porch takes me back to my childhood. Plus the smell of lilacs and freshly cut grass. Can't get any better!

I love the fact that summer days are longer and I feel like I have more time and pleasures to experience in life during this time..., but then, oh, how I love these warm, lazy, summer nights in the countryside watching fireflies and stargazing, being surrounded by the sound of crickets and frogs, my hair waving gently in the breeze...everything seems timeless and peaceful ...Thank you for this inspiring, dreamy peace of writing; your prose is perfection and touches my soul. You and your mother, both are beautiful!

I adore this post!!!! The music sets the tone perfectly. I love summer and for the inner child it brings out in me, my favorite things are NO SCHEDULE to adhere to (well at least for part of the summer), beach days just sitting and vegging with a great book on a perfect day, lobster rolls, bbq and smores at sunset, walking on the beach really early way before anyone else, summer entertaining, outdoor jazz concerts, geez....you have me all excited for summer now! Love this post:)

So sweet Suzanne! These memories of the past are so important. Seeing my parents growing old has been an eye-opener and makes me realize how quickly life goes by and how important it is to taste the peach, small the roses, listen to the sounds of summer, and enjoy life :)

Have a wonderful weekend!

You have summed it all up! The other day we went to check on the house and the neighbors sprinkler was going. I told Tom to listen and we both said, "Summer!" That noise is just summertime! Brilliant minds think alike!

Lovely summer thoughts Suzanne! I haven't gone barefoot in a long time. I'm 56 1/2 and soon will be 57. (Horror of all horrors! How DID that happen???) We're still having a very cold and wet spring. Can't wait for summer! xxoo

I love the concept of growing younger and I couldn't agree more that summer is the perfect season for this state of mind.
I may still be young, but I strive to always be happy with my age and where I am going.
Being barefoot, painted toes, grass or sand beneath my feet, the fired up grill, sun kissed shoulders, iced tea, snow cones, tv reruns that force me to pick up a book, these are the signs of summer!

Thinking of you often!
I see that you are growing younger and I aspire to be so much like you!
You are a blessing to all of us.

Lovely. I am smiling. :-) When we walk the dogs at night presently, we step off the sidewalk to avoid getting wet from the end-of-the- street neighbor's sprinkler...a few little drops hitting the leg always brings a smile though...a peach milkshake...oh yum...smelling freshly mown grass with a little bit of wild onion in it...the smell of a tomato plant...oh YES!...seeing the dogs laying fully stretched out on the back lawn catching a few sunrays and rolling on their backs. :-) the music of an ice cream truck...smelling the grills going all over the neighborhood in the evenings with a smorgasboard of delicious aromas wafting up and making me drool. ...so many things...and yes it does somehow make one feel young again...it's such a NICE state to be in...a "youthful kaleidoscope" of memories. HUGS to you Suzanne!!! love the pic or you and mom! xo

I love all of your simple pleasures and every one of them is on hold for me while I'm here in Dubai. I miss it. As exotic and glamorous as things may seem to live here, it's those simple, everyday things that I yearn for and can't wait until I can enjoy them again.
Have a wonderful weekend! xo

The taste of wonderful summer foods, the sounds of thunderstorms, the feel of warm soil in my hands, and the sight of SO much green...it all takes me back to younger days! SU-ZANNE! I am in LOVE with this post and with the things you think of to write about and the way that you write!!! Love, love, love this! It made me smile from start to finish and although I am 51 and a half, and will be 52 at the end of the summer, and in the throws of hot flashes ... I can still enjoy the summer, right?! You make it sound so fabulous, how can I not!

We recently spent an afternoon at a friends home on the water. It was the perfect day. Barefoot in the grass, barefoot on the beach, the essence of summer. We can't wait to return for more of that!

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!
