THAT Birthday

Although autumn
is my soul sister in
terms of the seasons,
I have always had a
special spot in my
heart for the month
of April.

My birthday month.

This particular year is
that birthday ~
The one I've rehearsed
saying in my mind ever
since the calendar turned
on the last one,
which ended
in
nine.

And here it is.

Thinking back to the
weeks that preceded
my last milestone
birthday, I remember
questions such as,

Are you ready for this?

Can you believe it?

How does it feel?

Yes.
Yes.
Great!

Was my response.

How could it not be,
when we had a friend
struggling with brain
cancer and a colleague
of my husband's who
had just died from
ovarian cancer?

To be honest, I've racked
up my share of wrinkles
in the last decade and my
energy level isn't always
where I'd like it to be.

But instead of injections
in my face or plastic surgery,
I choose to celebrate the
fact that I, like the beautiful
month of April,
am
here.

Here to watch a sunset.
Here to hold my husband's hand.
Here to receive hugs.
Here to laugh.
Here to remember the past.
Here to dream about the future.
Here to celebrate.

As my sweet friend Fiona,
whose mother died at age 46,
wisely confided,

I have a different perspective
on aging.  To me, aging is....

living.

So, bring it on.

How do I feel?

Wonderful.

With mirth and laughter,
let old wrinkles come.
~ William Shakespeare

And you honestly have the nicest pendants!!! I can only hope you keep on writing and sharing your life with us, who cherish being part of your life, even from a distance.

Happy, Happy birthday, Suzanne. I can remember THAT birthday...and I always thought that after THAT birthday the biggest milestone would be to ever turn 60. Well, I did turn 60 and it is wonderful. I'm with you-celebrating every day of LIFE...because I see so many my age that suffer and struggle. I LOVED being in my 50's was the best time of my life....so far...but now I am thinking that about the 60's.

Blessings to you- xo Diana

Well first off HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUZANNE! April is a wonderful month,a month to usher in a new season and begin anew. My sons birthday is in April too:) I loved this post and that you chose to take the silver lining in celebrating a birthday and realize what it really means, health, happiness, laughter, being with those you love. Yes, the yummy cake is great and the presents are wonderful but good health and being with those you love is truly priceless. Hope you have not only a fabulous birthday but may your entire year be filled with an abundance of love, happiness and good health!

Happy Happy birthday!! You GO! Fifties are UNDER-rated...Life continues to move on, and many changes come from all around and within....but it is the strength of a woman who has walked the path of that life and met it head on - one day at a time...with courage, stamina, fortitude, patience, joy, wonder, and yes...tears...that has the experience under her belt to realize that LIFE is simply what you make of it. Yes. Fifties will be Fabulous if you make them so. And I just believe that you WILL!!
Hugs to a special bloggy sister, that I am glad to have met, and wishing you the VERY VERY best BIRTHDAY ever, Suzanne! {{hug}} xoxo

Happy birthday, Suzanne! I can't tell you how much I needed to read this. I turn the-one-with-the-9 next week, and I'm dreading it. I dread next year even more. I don't know why, but this is hard on me. Probably because I don't feel as old as the calendar says I am. :)

Anyway, your words, as always, are an encouragement. Sending lots of love to you today!!

Birthday Blessings to a dear friend... May your day be filled with joy and happiness, and may you be surrounded by your family and gilled with love, fun and laughter.
Your post is full of wisdom and truths. It is obviously THAT birthday by the wisdom you've shared in this wonderfully written blog post. As one ages, their wisdom grows....how fortunate for us.
I so agree that ones attitude plays hugely on ones happiness and grace with aging, and you are and will do so beautifully...
I just celebrated another birthday in March with my daughter in Mexico, while celebrating her upcoming graduation during Spring Break...it was THAT Birthday + 1 for me. 50's are great, so welcome to the club... :)
Let's do lunch and celebrate together soon...
Miss you...

Happy belated birthday! I found the fifties very liberating and full of wonderful occasions -- I saw my son, and soon my daughter, get married to the love of their lives, and I've been blessed with two grandsons. It's the last year of this decade coming up for me ..like you I'm so glad to be alive!

Happy Birthday sweet girl. 50 is not so bad. I am just like you, I look at every day as a gift. I figure if God woke me up this morning he has something planned for me to do today and I thank him each and every day. I love your friends sentiments on aging. I read another saying about getting old, Not every one gets the privilege to get old. You are an aging beauty and you do not look 50 by any means. But even if you did that would be okay too.
I don't mind aging it is a natural process, but I refuse to become OLD, that is a state of mind, xo Kathysue

Hope your birthday week is full of joy and laughter!

Happy Birthday Beautiful You!
I'm so proud of you.

That it is just a number and that each day is a blessing. I appreciate you being such a good example of that!
PS...love the hair !
