Time Out

The best kind of
rain, of course,
is a cozy rain.

~ Susan Toth,  England for All Seasons

My daughter and I
are having a
time out.*

Not like the old days,
where she'd sit mournfully
on the bottom of the stairs
thinking over her behavior
while I cooled off.

No, this time we
are in it
together.

She took her PSAT's
in the morning but I let
her skip the afternoon
field trip to a university
that she has already seen.

The rain is coming down
hard and leaves are drifting
like confetti from the sky.
There is even thunder.

It's so cozy.

We've got popcorn popping
and Jane Austen's Emma
{the Gwenyth Paltrow version}
 is in stand-by mode, ready
for us to cuddle up and
and watch underneath the
down comforter on my bed.

I have work I could
be doing.

She has homework
she could be doing.

But this feels like
something we should
be doing, instead.

Because really, how many
more of her childhood days
will I have her all to myself,
savoring her laughter as we
spend a couple of weekday
hours sheltered from the cares
of the world, tucked up
next to each other?

Not enough.

Not nearly enough.

If you've never seen Emma, we
highly recommend it.  At the
beginning of the movie you won't
be overly fond of our heroine, but
by the end you come to love
her, foibles and all.

It is a cozy movie
for a cozy day.

Have you given
yourself
a time out, recently?

What did you do?
{Or what would you do?}

I'd love to hear about it!

As for me, I'm grabbing
the popcorn and heading
under the eiderdown with my
time out partner-in-crime : )

The rain has started again
in earnest and right now,
there is nowhere else in
the world that I'd rather be.

xx
Suzanne

*I wrote this on Wednesday;
today we are not in time out,
but back to our regularly-
scheduled lives.

Happy to have just found your blog! Had to comment because Emma is one of my very favorite movies and I can't wait to share it with my 2-1/2 year old daughter.

Perfect time spent together!

Hope and I enjoy girlie nights in (when Grant is working and Luke is out with friends), with popcorn and a cheesy film. I really don't care what the film is, I just enjoy cuddling up on the sofa, giggling with Hope. Special days indeed.

Love the music too!

It really doesn't matter how old your daughter gets she will still relish time out days with you - she will always be your little girl, and will appreciate a cuddle and a chat and special time with you, all to herself. However on the minus side 'time out' days can get terribly expensive! These days it can involve a bottle of wine and lunch. But you are right the cosy days are the very best, just you two escaping from the world for a while. Long may it continue.xx

It's ok to play hooky once in a while. Now that my daughters are grown and have long flown the nest I wish I had played hooky with them more often. xxoo

Hey Suzanne, my son took PSATs on Wednesday too, but they did it during the regular school day, no time outs around here. :/ When he gets time off, he only wants to be with his friends. My idea of a time out no interruptions, a good movie, a bottle of wine and some nibblies. That would make me quite happy. Have a wonderful weekend. Tammy (Our computer woes usually occur on the weekends and evenings when the servers are overloaded with users. Not a very good infrastructure here for most things. Hope your computer problems get sorted out.)

Ah yes....we have finally entered in the season; for a while there, I was wondering what had happened to our good old-fashioned fall! Cuddle up, cozy down, and soak in all the wonder that the rain of time and love can wash upon you dearest...Anita

Good morning,

I have read some parts of your story here having just recently stumbled onto your blog... but the last two entries have tugged at my mama heartstrings. I, too, have a sweet girl first ( 14 almost 15) and a great little boy second (11). I also have an almost 5 year old and 2.5 year old-- both precious boys.... now I am rambling.. but the posts-- yes, lately have been reminded in so many ways to slow down and savor where my older 2 are and how time is rolling on and these days of enjoying who they are as children given as gifts to our family will all too soon be a tender remembrance. The learning to lose entry spoke straight to the heart of my son and how he has experienced those seasons, too!... and my daughter is surely a Jane Austen aficianado... a time out is in order and your lovely blog has spoken to my heart as you have so generously shared yours.

Blessings on your weekend!

savoring those sweet moments
with your child
is undoubtedly more important than books
chores
the everyday routine
that comes and goes
forgotten by the next day

but an afternoon spent
snuggling down together
spilling snacks on the blankets
rewatching a favorite film

that is the stuff that memories are made of

thanks for sharing the coziness at fridays unfolded.

I am 100% envious of that day ... perfect in every way. I would love to have the exact day with my 16 year old. I LOVE the rain, LOVE a lazy day, LOVE popcorn in bed watching Emma ... Really? How lucky are you?!?!

Wonderful day that both of you will remember and cherish! We used to call them 'time on' days when the guys were little - time on mom's lap to chat, or watch a movie!

Perfect, Suzanne...just perfect.

I gave my daughters days like that every once in a while...we called them "mental health" days...

Now with homeschooling in our lives, seems like there's not as much need for it--our schedule is so much calmer, family time so much more plentiful...and beautiful movies a regular "course" in our curriculum!

"Emma" (especially that version) is one of our very favorites! Just perfect for a little mother/daughter time. Have you seen the newer Mobil Masterpiece version that came out two years ago? Absolutely charming!

Thank-you for sharing your beautiful thoughts and experiences, dear friend...wishing you and your family the most wonderful weekend...

Oh, I just love this! We are so thrilled that you came by and shared this with us at Inspiration Friday this week. :-) I am still in a season of life when "time out" for my daughter means sitting on the bottom step after doing something naughty, but I so look forward to the day when it means something sweet like this! I don't want it to go by too fast though so I'll cherish these days knowing she will be taking her PSAT's before I know it. I'm thinking your daughter is pretty blessed to have a mom who recognizes that we all need "time out" days once in awhile! :-)

Oh my...time out indeed...looking forward to that in the very near future...been working non stop 24-7 and become a hermit to get all the boxes unpacked...so far there are only 2 items that I have not been able to locate, and only a handful of items broken or cracked...what an awesome team of packers and unpackers...altogether a pleasant experience! God is good. The 1000 mile trip with the dogs even went without a hitch! So good to be here finally and settling in. Glad to be connected again and catching up in the bloggy world. Yes. definitely feel that time out coming. And YES>..spend that time with your daughter...I have already cried about leaving mine so very far away.... :-( {{{hugs}}}}

What a wonderful day for you and your daughter. I imagine you had cuddle days with your mom too.
I had a "me" day last week and drove down to Laguna and went through some art galleries and enjoyed the ocean and all the beautiful sail boats. Love those days! I usually head to the ocean for "me" days. And in the winter when we have rain, I do just what
you did, I hide under the comforter and read or watch a good movie.

I also want to mention how much I loved your last post, as well. It was very touching and something I think all of us have experienced in one way or another. And yes, ice cream helps!

Precious Suzanne!

THANK YOU for coming by with such kind comments! OH, I would love to have all three of those coats!

I have many more drawings that I will be offering, but the time it is taking to prepare them to photograph is time consuming!!! How I am going to do this with full-time teaching, I do NOT know, but it will be fun to give it a try!

HOW WAS YOUR TIME OUT????

So glad to see that Autumn has finally made its way to us!

Fondly, Anita

Oh this brought tears to my eyes. The idea of wanting to stop time and forget about all the other things that you should be doing and just doing what feels right.

My daughter and I mostly having time-outs from each other. She is in that everything she does drives me crazy stage!

This is just too sweet your cozy afternoon. I can't wait for my daughter and I to do that!
