The Good Life

Oh, this has gotta be the good life
this has gotta be the good life
this could really be a good life, good life.

~ song by OneRepublic

My son loves this song and
plays it, often while in his room,
digging into his homework.

And this mom has to smile
at his 12-nearly-13 croaky voice
belting out these words.

I'm glad he sings.

I'm glad he feels he has a
good, good life.

I'm happy that it is a sunny
Thursday morning as I write and he
and his sister are home with me
for a two-day fall school break.

There was frost on the ground
when I took Gracie out first thing
this morning.  Frost on the pumpkins,
I declared as she sniffed the ground.

Except we don't have any pumpkins,
{outdoors} yet.  I am one of those
hold outs that doesn't get pumpkins
for the front steps until it's closer
to the big night.

Frost means it's close enough.

At our house, that big night is
preceded by another big night,
which is my son's birthday.  No
matter what the festivities entail,
October 30th is always capped
off with pumpkin carving.

I hope that ritual will always
be a part of his good, good life.

It's almost noon and we are
still slogging around in our pj's,
thinking ahead to the evening and
what movies are on at the theater.

If my son didn't have a guitar
lesson this afternoon and if we
didn't need milk, eggs and
bananas from the store, I'd be
happy to hunker down right
where we are for the day.

But my boy needs his guitar
lesson to learn his songs and the
 bigger boy {aka Mr. Privet}
needs his bananas, so off we
will go.

If this is what that older
crooner, Tony Bennett, meant
by his song The Good Life,
then I'll take it.

What are you up to this
weekend in your own

good
good
life?

xx
Suzanne

#1 Wishing that I had a cool blue ukelele [that's the second time in a week that I wished this....hmmm]

#2 Cleaning, cooking, gardening, resting in the hammock, visiting the library to bring home some excellent new tomes, planning for a big working bee at our home next week, but most of all....

#3 Recharging the batteries.

I hope that your weekend ahead is glorious Suzanne and that all that this good, good life can offer is shared abundantly in your home.

PS: Love today's tune on the playlist too.

This is such a sweet post - it's always really heartening to take stock of what is good in our lives. I do a similar thing every Friday when me and some other girls join in with 'Rocking Your World Friday', and we dig deep (some weeks we have to dig very deep!) and produce a list of 'gratefuls'.

This is mine this week,
http://fiddlesnips.blogspot.com/2011/10/whats-rocking-my-world-this-friday_21.html

I'm so happy your son knows he has a good life - sometimes teenage angst can colour life with rather dark colours.

Have a great weekend,

xx

On Saturday I'm hoping not to be woken at dawn, then to have a quiet morning at home, I'll take my girl to her ballet class, then we'll go to an orchestral concert early evening, and on the way home we'll be picking husband up from the airport.
On Sunday, I'd like it to start the same way, then we are meeting up with a group of people to watch the rugby world cup final with a meal. Oh, at some point I'll squeeze in preparing a pie to feed 15!
Hope you enjoy your weekend.

It sounds like you always make it a good life around your home. They'll remember those holiday, birthday and weekend traditions forever. My son plays the guitar also and I love to listen to him play up in his room. Enjoy all his music and enjoy this weekened.
We'll be watching football and eating chili...my favorite weekend plans. :)

My oldest son's birthday is Oct. 30 also! I have a very good old friend here who comes to my home every fall to spend the night and hang out for a day. We are going up to Stillwater today to haunt the shops :)The rest of the weekend will be finally getting the yard cleaned up, doing some last minute home maintenance. Loving the weather!

I am about to gather the cat and travel to the yellow house where I may work on wallpaper removal or not. I also have another project I need to get going on but am easily distracted by the garden, bird watching, or a book.

i love that song, suzanne. saw a private one republic concert last year, met them, and they are fabulous.

would honestly love to sit and read blogs today but will do a cardio class, clean bathrooms, groom my dog, then inspect the trim my husband has been painting in the basement (flagging the drips and problem spots). we haven't been to a movie in months since our entertainment is basement reno! but we'll be together and happy.

I have been obsessed with that song (the OneRepublic version) since I heard in while in CA earlier in September. I can't get it out of my head! But, you know, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing--it's a good song. :)

Glad you're having some good days!

What a wonderful way to spend two days whith your kids, a Fall break and time in your jammies and just being together. That is my favorite way to spend the weekends! And the holidays, family, food, jammies and books, watching the world go by out the window without leaving the house.

thank you for sharing the beauty of life...daily life!

Enjoy your weekend, Elizabeth

I sometimes hear my "boy" singing in his room too and it makes my own heart just SING!!!! I love that!
This weekend our family will be taking a trip to our local amusement park to watch one of my girls dance in their "Frightmares" show. Pumpkins are bought and gathered on the porch ... I am loving this time of year! Happy weekend my friend.

a morning away...shopping and drinking coffee, some cleaning, a cookout, a movie night, and a pumpkin patch. now that sounds good!

Sigh....I am smiling just thinking of your son singing this and you standing there listening with a smile bursting in your heart AND on your face. yeah...me too. LOVE and hide those moments to pull back up later. God is good. (LOL...Kurt brought our pumpkin inside last night here because he didnt want the frost to mess or mush it up inside.) We always get one and carve it and then soak all the seeds and roast them. Yummy nom nom snack...and a tradition for us here. What a sweet picture you have painted of life and children and moments of leisurely pause, and enjoying traditions and celebrations. May your weekend be delightful! and yes, now I can say my weather is probably a tad closer in measure to your weather! (although I hope our winter isn't as cold or long as YOURS!!!! shriek!) Hugs to my bloggy sister and friend. Glad to be back sharing in your life and writings. xoxo

Such a beautiful sentiment. My heart swells to read this because I, too, have a tween (12 on Nov. 4th) and she listens to this too! I actually love the song.....right now I really need to be reminded of what I should be thankful for, while staying in a hotel due to a house that looks like a war zone and is covered in cement dust. Renovation is hell. But the ultimate outcome is so worth it. We'll be Irish dancing and performing churchly duties and hopefully enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. Hope you do, too.

Hi Suzanne, I love that song. My oldest son, now 16, plays drum and plays around with the guitar. He and his friends get together and play but they don't have a singer. My youngest son will be 13 on the 26th of this month. He loves to sing but won't do it in public though he actually is pretty good. I am hoping he will try out for the school play this year. He definitely is dramatic. :) have a beautiful day! Tammy

Love The Good Life, whether it be Tony's version or any other. I'm glad your son is enjoying his guitar - one of my favorite things is to listen to Don play his guitar and sing. It makes me happy!

Dear Suzanne,
It's my song for 2011;it's just so upbeat and makes you want to smile and feel happy " ...when you are happy like a fool, let it take you over ...My son plays the guitar too and I was going through the same emotions and thoughts while I was listening to him singing " Here comes the sun , here comes the sun , and I say it's all right ..." I hope our sons and daughter never stop singing and always feel content with their lives .
I so admire your ability to notice , contemplate and write so beautifully these tiny joys and precious moments that make up a meaningful life .
Life is good and "we have so much to feel good about "!

This is indeed a good life...with all of it's tragedies and hard things I am so blessed and happy to be who I am and doing what I'm doing. Had to smile...I'm sitting here trying to figure out how I can possibly not leave the house and the rags I have on today. Really need to run a few errands...but! XO, Mona
