Pass It On

October 2010

My name is Suzanne
and I'm a recovered
news addict.

September 11, 2001
caught me off guard.
I was bustling around,
getting my first-grader
ready for the bus and
my toddler fed that
fateful morning when
the telephone rang.

My husband was in
Chicago on business
and told me to turn on
the television.
{via Maciek R. on Flickr}
He shared the last rental
car out of downtown
Chicago that day,
which he rented in
the shadow of the
Sear's Tower.  I
remember praying
that Chicago wasn't
on the terrorists' radar.

Had he not called me,
I would have kissed
my daughter good-bye
and waved to the bus,
with strains from a song
from PBS Kids in the background;
music to our morning.

September 2001

An ordinary day.

But as you know, this
was not an ordinary day.

Thus began my addiction
to the news stations on
TV and on the radio.  I was
afraid that if I wasn't
clued in at all times, that I
would miss something
critical like I did the morning
of September 11th.

{via Zeetz Jones on Flickr}

But the problem with most
of our media outlets is this:
They mainly report bad news.
And that gets in your head
and in your heart and like
the cloud over the Peanut's
character, Pigpen, it can
envelope you.

So, I made a conscious decision
last spring to scale way, way
back on my news viewing
and listening.....And to seek
out sources that would tell
the other stories....the good news
that exists in our world.

About the same time, I started
to notice public service announcements
and billboards from an organization called
The Foundation for a Better Life.

Completely endowed by the private
funds of a philanthropist, The Foundation
has this as it's mission statement:

The Foundation for a Better Life
began as a simple idea to promote
positive values.  We believe that
people are basically good and just
need a reminder.  And that the values
we live by are worth more when we
pass them on.

I love that.

The Foundation's award-winning
Pass It On TV spots almost always
make me cry, even though I've
seen many of them numerous times
over the last year!

Their Pass It On
billboards are equally
warm and thought-provoking.

Focusing on positive values, The
Foundation's website, values.com,
began with a brief list of good
values and has grown to over
75.  Radio messages, podcasts
and quotes and stories related
to values can be found on the
website in ten different languages.

There is even a section called
Good News that links to positive
newspaper and magazine stories
across the USA and the world.

I don't know about you, but
for me, this is the kind of thing
that I want to focus on and
bring more of into my life.

The Foundation for a Better
Life does not accept donations.
They simply ask that you
exemplify positive values that
can be passed on to others.

How cool is that?

I'm adding The Foundation's
link to my sidebar, where
their quote of the day will
be shown, each day.  You
can also sign up to have the
quote of the day e-mailed
to you, here.

I want to keep
accentuating positive
values as I make my
way through each
day.  The words from
the values list that sang
to me were

kindness
gratitude
courtesy
encouragement
and
optimism

Will  you  join me in
passing on positive
values that speak to
your heart?

I'd love to know
which ones you'd
choose.

Those who wish to sing,
always find a song.

Happy weekend,

I'm with you Suzanne... why is it the ugly gets you down so much faster than the beautiful can pick you up? That needs to change! Beautiful post. Thanks!

Suzanne, remembering "the day" still gives me chills. You and I were in similar places with our kids. I was volunteering in my son's art class when I heard the news. Later that night I learned that Sandy Bradshaw, a mom in my son's preschool class was a flight attendant on flight 93. For so long, I was afraid and also became a news junkie. Now I have decided that if the sky is going to fall, I don't want to see it coming. I want to live, enjoy, and love every day despite the gloom & doom.

Happy weekend my friend!

Good Morning Suzanne
I see these commercials all the time on BBC America and you're right it's so good to see a positive image on TV. I was only saying to my dad the other week, that newspapers publish such awful stories, that it makes me wonder whether copycat crimes are then committed or hatred fueled. The British newspapers are notorious for this... especially towards muslim groups... I agree that if more positive images were portrayed, this would hopefully be passed on and work towards making this world a safer and happier place. Lx

the events of that day still stop me in my tracks when i think of them. i too can remember having the news on the tv on all day. thanks for the happy news site. i don't think i have ever seen those ads. i will have to open my eyes. love todays quote on the sidebar. have a great day my friend.

I am also a recovering news addict. I still watch, listen and read lots of news but never after 7pm. Also, once I've heard a negative story I no longer listen to anything more about it. It is so easy for hatred to be fueled. We really must fuel LOVE and POSITIVE values. This foundation seems to have a wonderful approach.
Thank you for passing it on and I will also pass it on...let's keep the good news going! Again, your words are a wonderful inspiration. You truly have a loving heart. Thank you so much, Suzanne.

I was at a friends house along with a few other friends having coffee. The phone rang telling us the same...turn on the tv and stay put. We all cried together watching the events unfold...worry if we knew someone, worry about our children at school.

I don't watch nearly as much news either. It is so depressing and often skewed. I'm generally a positive and upbeat person and on the days when I'm not, I look around at my home and family and it's just so easy to snap out of it.

Thanks for bringing awareness to these billboards...amazing. I had only seen the Micheal Fox ad previously. Inspiring!

i love those billboards. love 'em. i hadn't looked any further into them, but i'm so glad you did--and passed it on. i've scaled back my *news* consumption. i noticed that by keying into the news and even FB first thing in the morning....i'm destined to a day in poopsville. i crave more sunny in my life; i know the clouds are there, but unless i CAN do anything about it--i'm going to stay in the sunshine.
btw, my parent's were flying into NYC from Russia that awful morning, but had to fly back.....germany took there plane in, thank goodness. i had no idea where they were for 36 hours.

SO beautiful, Suzanne...

I really don't like to watch the news anymore. A bit of a Pollyanna by nature, I'm afraid!

I was addicted to it for years, though...especially through the 9/11 times...how could you not be? I was to have left on a trip to New Orleans on 9/12...not to be.

I try to fill my life with all those beautiful words you mentioned (not always successful, though!)...I believe in striving for those things that are good, beautiful and virtuous, and try to teach my daughters to do the same. There is so much good in the world...those are the things we need to cling to and pass on.

And hope. And faith.

Thank-you, my friend, for being one that I know will always be sharing those things...you truly do live the spirit of passing it on.

May your day be filled with every good thing...

Julie

I completely understand what you mean about the media always highlighting the worst news. I have been given a hard time for years because I don't watch the news or read the news hardly ever and I always tell people that I don't need that negative information surrounding me. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful post today and encouraging everyone to turn of the negative which in turn will turn on the positivity!

I agree that we all need more positivity in the news. When was the last time we heard a good-news story amongst all the protests, terrorists, floods, earthquakes, criminals, economic collapse, celebrity junk stories....
I try to live with a positive outlook on things and often just find myself having to distance myself from the news because it just brings me down. Great post Suzanne and your blog is always like sunshine when I read it! Have a beautiful weekend my friend xo

Suzanne,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I believe "positive" breeds "positive" (and vice versa with negative). This is not saying I have a Pollyanna view of the world. I'm certainly aware of the incredibly dark things out there. But, I cannot live my life with them in the forefront.
Best,

I am so right there with you, Suzanne! I love the commercials and billboards of what you speak. It is so easy to get sucked into the pool of "news"...but is so much more uplifting when there are positive things to listen to.

Hi Suzanne,
This is an amazing post! I too became a news junkie after 9/11. CNN was on 24/7! Last year, I turned it all off. I'll admit that now I might not know everything bad or good going on, but I'm free of all the negative, "the sky is falling" angst I was putting myself through. Now I am hearing for the first time about Pass It On. Thanks to you. Like Pay it Forward, I will Pass It On. ~Delores

Kudos to YOU Miss Suzanne for posting this. I don't listen to the news because of all the negativity. Call me Pollyanna, but I choose, and it is a choice to put more posetive thoughts in my brain. I am not saying I never watch the news but it is a rare occasion. I love this idea and I am going to go to their website and sign up for emails. I get a daily devotional that always makes my day look a little differently to me. I think it is all in one's focus. I like to think that I choose the high road more than down the rabbit hole, as I call negative thoughts!! I just love YOU sweet lady and I feel that I a blessed to know you and my life is a little better because of YOU!! xo KS

This is a lovely post Suzanne, and you are so right. I was just saying on my blog the other day how depressing the news always is. It's such a nice idea to focus on the good news, it would make the world such a happier place.I will definitely be signing up - we all need good news in our lives.

I've been thinking of emigrating to get away from all that is bad in England but perhaps we've just not been looking hard enough for the good.

Thank you for opening my eyes xxx

Suzanne your post brought me to tears.
I am one who believes in paying attention to what is happening in this big ole world.
I think one day "some" will wake up and be clueless to something major.
I do get very frustrated with the media and the negativity and self promoting to what ever cause- instead of reporting truth and also the goodness that is in this world.
There is so much goodness and NOBODY can convince me other wise!
I LOVE the inspirational adds that The Foundation for A Better Life promotes- I love the goodness that they share.
I love the goodness that you share as well.
I would love to meet you sometime and give you a great big "you are wonderful hug"!
Thanks for all that you share.

Thanks for sharing... What a great way to re-focus and no longer let fear control how we see the world. I think 9/11 left us all feeling so out of control, that fear over-took us! Your post helps put life back in it's proper perspective. BTW, what song/artist is playing in the back-ground?

Beach House Living said...

I'm not sure if it's the same foundation but a commercial I actually like is the little boy walking on stage to play the the piano. The professional says don't stop...

What a wonderful organization. It is hard to imagine in today's world they don't want anything, no donation except to be kind to others and pass on goodwill. That is so uplifting to read and know I try to practice random and intentional acts of kindness every day. Doesn't it just lift your heart when someone does something kind for you, like lets you cut them in the grocery line because you only have a couple items?

Love this post, but that is not unusual! Thank you my friend.

One of the local channels here has a "good news Friday" segment which is so refreshing. Since billboards are banned in Maine perhaps this is a better way to get positive news out around here. Great post Suzanne! xo ~Lili

Thank you for sharing this site, Suzanne! While I do keep up on world happenings, I can't watch the news a lot, as I take it really to heart. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:8~ "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." I find if I live my life this way, I am a happier person!
Some values I find very important are compassion and generosity! Thank you, Suzanne...I love this post!

Lissa said...

I've chosen to cut back on the news as well. Sometimes I feel like I don't really know what's going on anymore. But like you said they tend to focus on the bad. I like the idea of promoting positive things!

Jemsmom said...

Can I just say, "Amen!" I hardly ever watch the news anymore. I just can't stand all the horrible things out there. I especially have to be careful with a little one who absorbs everything and questions it all. I love the Pass It On campaign. What started me on my positive outlook mode in life was the commercial a few years back where the guy picks up a doll for a woman's child. She then holds the door open for someone, who then does a good deed. It is something like that, but it made me realize how one small act of kindness can really make a difference. At the dinner table every night, we ask "did you do a good deed today?" I love that!

Good morning my dear friend. Yes, those of us who want to sing will find a song, and if one cannot be found, MAKE YOUR OWN! I find that a smile and a kind word always gets me through the day. If there is anything that I can live by when all else seems to be drowning in the sea of bad news, is that I still have love in my heart....you are so beautiful. Look at that picture of you and your beloved daughter. You shine dearest. Someday, again, we shall see each other!!!! Anita

My son was in his first duty station as a young Marine Lt. on 9-11, and our lives as a family were changed forever. Like you, I watched hours of news, listened to talk radio and pondered the fate of our country way too much. When Matt was deployed 3 days after his wedding, and became a part of the battalions that marched on Bagdad, I was glued to the TV. It consumed me, and I found my normally optimistic attitude being twisted into something that did not serve me well. About 2 years ago, I too made the pledge to stop the news...go cold turkey...and it was like withdrawal for a while. But since then I've been able to choose to be positive in my thoughts and bring much more goodness into my life. I don't recall ever seeing these commercials or billboards, but because of you, I will become one of their biggest fans. Thanks so much for sharing. It makes me happy to know that someone like you is raising the next generation of children. Wish there were more of you. Thanks again.

First of all, this is a terrific post -- I've always loved these, too, but didn't know much about the organization behind them. Bravo to you for taking the time to find out and then share it with us.

Second, I am a news addict -- though I try hard to avoid the screaming matches. I was doing pretty well -- then recent events have tied me back down to the news channels to follow events in the Middle East. I agree -- too much can really get yuo down. I'm not sure if it's in Simple Abundance or Artists Way where you take a media moratorium for a week. It's hard, but you feel "better."

Finally, I hope you read my current posts on The Marmelade Gypsy and Chopsticks and String --- they are about good things, good people, that inspire and pay it forward.

Suzanne, you always inspire me in ways I didn't even know I needed it. I for the most part, don't listen to TV news, but tune it about once a day, just for the big world headlines. Even so, I feel the anxiety creeping in. I too, love the 'spots' from the Foundation for a Better Life. These are the things I desire to fill my brain and heart with. I still feel that we need to be aware of our world and what is going on in and around it,(as I know you do too) but it doesn't need to consume us and steal our joy, and by tuning in to positive media more we can find a balance.

I Love your blog sweet friend and am thankful for the things I learn from you.
Sending hugs...

The same thing happened to me after 9/11. But, I still have the news on all the time-- The difference is that today I have the tv news on but not the sound. I'll see the "breaking news" flash if it comes on, but I can't listen to it all day long anymore.

I've noticed the Foundation's campaign as well. It's pretty impressive.

Cheers, jj

My kids had just gotten on the bus and I turned the news on just in time to see it all happen. I have barely turned the news off since then....crazy. It definitely leaves you with a bit of a 'the sky is falling' state of mind, that's for sure!
Thanks for the reminder to seek out the positive as well. There is much good in this crazy world of ours and I love that there are people who make it their mission in life to highlight that good.
