Warming Up

There is nothing better than
the encouragement of a good friend.

~ Jean Jacques Rousseau

I received a text out of the blue
today from my friend Kathleen,
who has completed six months
of chemotherapy and is now
going through radiation treatments
for breast cancer.

Just remembering when I got my
diagnosis and I'm so thankful and
glad you were with me.  I'm so thankful
God blessed me with your friendship.
Love you <3

What an unexpected gift
on an extraordinarily cold, cold
Minnesota day in January ~
A long way from the hot, hot
day in Savannah, last June,
when the doctor's call came through
on K's cell, the second
day of our mini girls-getaway.

You couldn't tell how heavy our spirits were.
My heart swelled with love
and yes, warmth, when I
read her dear words.

Every time someone leaves
me a comment or sends me
an e-mail letting me know that
they have given me a blog
award, I feel that same warmth.

But I'm bad about sharing those
awards ~ my Midwestern
sensibilities whisper in my
ear that it's not polite
to toot your own horn!

However, as I mentioned, it's a
frosty day here today, so
I'm pulling out those warm
thoughts to share with you.
Let's have a cup of tea and
start kindling the glow.....

The first kudos comes from the super
sweet Jeanie,  The Marmelade Gypsy.
{Thanks, Jeanie!}
It is called the Cherry on Top Award
and required me to answer this
question:  If you had the chance
to go back and change one thing in
your life, would you and what
would it be?

Yes, there is one thing.... I finished college
in three years instead of four and jumped
right into my first career position.
I wish now that I had taken that extra
year and moved to another country
as an au pair.  I was just so type A
in those days; I didn't think I had
alternate options.  I also had a boyfriend,
{now Mr. Privet} and I was worried about
leaving him behind.  I didn't have the
wisdom to know that if it was true
love, he'd still be here when I got back!

He's still here : )
Christmas 2010
Next to make us toasty
are warm words/awards
that require me to share seven random
things about myself.  These came from
three very lovely bloggers:
Alison, Stuff and Nonsense  ~ Versatile Blogger award
Melody- Mae, Melody-Mae and
Stylish Blogger award
{Thanks, Ladies!}

1.

I love to laugh.
I crave it.
I need to laugh every day!

{I said it was necessary, not pretty!  Note to self: double chin when laughing.}
2.

I am a tall girl.
No one but me is
allowed to dry my jeans.
If you do, watch out.....
I'm very protective of those inseams.

3.

I was once told I would
never have children
without undergoing IVF.
I changed doctors.
Different diagnosis.
Two blessings, age 15 and 12.

4.

My dad was the oldest
of five boys and I
was the first grandchild.
My grandma was so excited
to finally have a little girl
in the family : )

5.

My favorite clothing color
is grey,
which I love to
accent with colorful
pieces and accessories.

My typical day look; jcrew.com
6.

I am a popcorn-aholic.
I can't just eat a
handful at the movies.
I have to get the
humongous tub,
with
butter
of course.

7.

Due to military and corporate moves,
when I was in ninth grade,
I was in my ninth school.
I graduated from that
high school, which is in the
coldest town in the contiguous USA.
I once walked to school
when it was 30 degrees below
zero, without wind chill!

My daughter with my parent's dober-woman.
The last warm words I received
were from the wonderful Simone,
Liebster "Favorite" award ~
who simply asked that I recognize
a newer, wonderful blogger.
{Thank you, Simone!}

Since it is Friday
and she graces someone
each Friday with a flower,
I'd like to recognize
Laura is an English rose,
married to an Australian
and now living in New Jersey.
Laura writes about her
life here in the States
with her hubby and two
little girls, from an expat's
point of view.  I love hearing
her stories of growing up
in England and the traditions,
foods, etc. that mean home
to her.  I swear, I can hear
her accent!

Be sure to stop by and
see Laura for a cup of
tea, a smile and a Friday
flower....and congratulate
her on her Liebster!
When she answers the door,
please tell her that Suzanne
from Privet & Holly sent you!

Aaahhh....I'm feeling toastier
by the moment.  Hope you
all stay cozy this weekend!
Thank you for stopping by ~
Each and every one of you
is a special gift to me and
it is an honor to share my
ramblings with you from
this little corner of Blog Land.

~ Gratitude ~
The state of being grateful; warm
and friendly feeling toward a benefactor;
kindness awakened by a favor received; thankfulness.

YOU are amazing. And to think that I will SEE you this weekend. I just want to listen to you. I just want to see your home, your surroundings, for you are a special lady and I am in tears as I see your dear pal's face, hearing about the heaviness of your hearts as the news hit you that summer day. But joy shall be ours in the morning...and friendship is the gift inside the box of unknowns...friends always come through. I am so delighted to know you and to think you would host ME in your home..thank you Suzanne. See you tomorrow! Anita

Aaah, Suzanne, this is a perfect post. It's lovely to find out more about you. Isn't it funny how we found each other's blogs separately? I love that.

You sound like an incredibly supportive, warm friend. I feel lucky to know you.

3 years? Really? Why am I not surprised? It was nice to learn a little more about you Suzanne and it was also nice to get a tiny update on Kathleen. I know how you feel about your inseams, most of jean are approaching "flood" status.

The love and support of a friend. There is nothing like it on earth. I am sure you give Kathleen lots of that. Another great post my dear invisible friend. XXOO

I loved learning more about you, Suzanne! I hope Kathleen's treatment is going well...the Rousseau quote is really true. I'm really looking forward to meeting you soon! PS- the whole reason I go to the movies is for the giant bucket of popcorn LOL...

I love to read your thoughts. No one can describe her feelings as you do....

I am grinning from ear to ear today, all because of you!
I'm adding Kathleen to my prayer list.
I feel your pain on being tall, my short friends tell me frequently how they wish they were tall, I remind them ever so kindly about the downfalls. For instance, they can ALWAYS hem their pants...but I can not add fabric to mine! I do have to say I LOVE and LIVE in Gap Long & Leans (I buy 95% of them on ebay) I love having too long pants!
I'm excited to check out some of these other bloggers you have mentioned!
I hope you have a blessed Friday.
I'm sending "warm" wishes your way...it's a chilly 27 right now!

One thing I have learned this past year of blogging is that though we are all so different and scattered throughout the world, there are so many common threads that bind us all together. There are some beautiful and extraordinary gals (guys) out there. You are one of them and I'm so pleased to have "met" you. :)
I pray for your friend that she recovers in full and thanks for sharing some fabulous new blogs.
It was fun getting to know you a little more...why am I not surprised that you finished college in three years!

Well hey smarty pants I didn't know that about you. I loved that you let us in on some more personal aspects of your life. Your honey is cuuutttee! I don't think I've seen a pic of him before. You guys make a beautiful couple. Okay now you have me craving popcorn. I'm thinking MAY we need to go to a movie and pigout...ha;)

My dear lovely friend,
thank you for the shout-out today on your amazing blog and also for your sweet comment on mine. I knew I loved you right from the get go but, now I see you and I have two more things in common...first of all I could eat popcorn everyday and NEVER get tired of it. I have wonderful memories of my dad & I eating it after dinner. He used to make it almost every night and he and I would eat & eat it. No one else in the family inherited that love btw. ;) I also moved when I was wrong. One year I went to 3 new schools! We finally stopped my freshman year!
I am also extremely happy to hear about your friend...you tell her if she ever wants to talk to someone who has been there and lived to tell the tale (twice) she can contact me...if not know I will say a prayer of thanks today for her!

have a wonderful and blessed weekend!

Happy weekend wishes to you Suzanne. Sending prayers and thoughts through you to Kathleen. I feel the same way as you about awards. I feel a bit guilty when I get them and share because I can just never narrow things down when it comes to passing them along so I just don't then I feel guilty about that. :/ The post about your beautiful grandma was so poignant. I love your analogies when describing her slow drift away from reality. Blessings to you and yours, Tammy

Wonderful Suzanne that you let us peak into "yo-self" like that! And about that popcorn...I take it one step further by demanding my own tub! Suzanne,
Oh thanks for sharing about you and your life, I am amazed how many events in our lives are similar. We will have to share more over a cuppa someday.
I love visiting, I'll be back soon but right now I have to save my jeans from the dryer.
Happy Weekend!

Oh yes, thanks for the photo compliments. I hate to admit I but I "shoot" more from the hip than from the manual. I'm working on that. I'm taking another class starting in Feb. hopefully some things will "click"

Suzanne, I read your beautiful post yesterday and was desperate to reply, but had a couple of family commitments... so here I am today, and the sentiment is still the same. Thank you so much for thinking of me, I'm touched. I hold you blog in very high regard and the fact that you mentioned little old me, makes my heart swell. Reading your post I was saddened to hear about your friend and hope that she makes a quick recovery... aided by the prayers and thoughts of all around her. I feel I hear a new story almost every day, of people fighting life threatening illnesses... each day I close my eyes and say a little prayer of thanks... and remember those that need help right now. Suzanne, you are an amazing women, whose words touch so many. Thank you. Lx

Aww, this is such a sweet post! The email from your friend is so thoughtful, and what a good friend you are :)
Your father is like mine - he has four brothers - but they are all older than him (they had one little sister, the youngest, but she passed away...). When my father asked her for suggestions for a name for his first-born (that would be me) - she only had names for girls - because she wanted me to be a girl just like your grandmother did :)

and sometimes we go to the movies JUST to buy popcorn :-)

How wonderous. I am so glad you shared such wonderful bits of you with us-- that's one of the reasons I really do love blogs a bit -- and how we get to know one another. And to do it in such a charming way! But I think the one that sticks with me most-- was your first about three-instead-of-four years of college. An interesting and poignant regret.

I send prayers and wishes for your friend's recovery and hope the worst is over. I recently came across a website that does free housecleaning four times (in places nationwide) for those undergoing chemo. If you think this might be useful, let me know-- I'll send the link. I can't vouch for them, but Hoover sponsors them, so that says something at least.
