Blurring the Lines....

The supreme accomplishment
is to blur the line
between work and play.
Arnold Toynbee

Since stumbling into Blogland nearly
a year ago, I have been longing to take
photos as wonderful as those that
I've seen on some of my favorite blogs.

When I started writing Privet and Holly
last April, it was my birthday month and
my sweet hubby presented me with my
first DSLR camera to commerate the
big day and my new adventure.

For the next four months I stumbled
along, getting lucky with some shots
and many times, unlucky with others.

And, often, I didn't have a picture
in my own cache that adequately
expressed what I needed to say.

A baby's tiny feet.
An elderly couple walking hand in hand.
A dog happily riding in a pick-up truck.

So, I turned to my go-to source
for borrowing pictures that spoke
to me {and hopefully, to you},
Flickr and on occasion, Tumblr
or Google Images, too

Meanwhile I continued snapping
my camera eagerly wherever I went,
hoping to fill my coffers with inspiring
and expressive photos to enhance
my words.

All was going well until one
fateful day in August.
I left my camera bag tucked under
an airline seat....and forgot it.

When {in panic mode} I realized in
the parking lot what I was missing,
I immediately went back, filled out
the necessary paperwork to retrieve
it and waited, counting on the
goodness of humanity to deliver
my camera back to me.

I was to be disappointed in
humanity, this time around.

And so, I limped along with my
old point and shoot through the
autumn months.  I brought
home a couple of different DLSRs
from Costco to try.  Amazingly,
the prices continued to go down
and down.

I finally purchased a new one in
December!  And even better,
enrolled in a digital photography
class with a super sweet friend.

{No, she is not the friend!}
This is the year that we are
finally going to make sense of ISO,
aperture, shutter speed and everything
in between.....and move the
dial off of AUTO!

And we want to take YOU
along with us.

Thus was hatched a series of
eight Tuesday posts which will
explain our weekly homework and
share ten of the photos that
we have taken that week.

The homework this week was
to play with aperture settings.  What
is aperture?  It refers to the size of
the opening in the lens.  The larger
the opening, the more light is
let in; the smaller the opening,
the less light.  Like the pupil
in your eye.  Or shutters on
a window ~ how wide they
are open to the light.

If you have an SLR camera,
the settings to control aperture
are called F-stops.  The lower
the  F-stop number, the  w  i  d  e  r
the lens opening; the higher the
F-stop, the narrower the opening.

A lower F-stop produces
a nice, soft, buttery
background.....

{Hey, this is fun!}

Here's hoping it all
comes together, soon.
With your help, it most
definitely doesn't seem
like work.

Thanks for coming
along to play with me!

xx
Suzanne

{All of these photos were
taken by yours truly this week
for my Ten for Tuesday assignment.}

This is exciting - I am longing for a real camera and to learn how to see little pieces of the world through a lense. I still have some begging to do!
So give us all the lessons you want - I will be an eager learner from you!
Happy Day!

Hurray for you my dear bloggy sister! I know you will excel in this, and good for you for taking a class...you inspire us all. Now I will wait for that ballet class news to pop up here as time passes.... :-) :-)

Excitedly awaiting to see your photograpy skills shared here as you also teach us some new things, as you just did today. Wow..I feel very enlightened about the operations of a camera...THANK you.
As always...enjoyed my visit with you! Your post and viewing your photos made me ponder that God wants us to let the background circumstances of life become a bit blurred and not concentrate so much there, as we focus on what He wants to be FIRST and Foremost in our life for that day. Setting our lens or view, so to speak... on the important focal point, moving in to get a sharp and clear picture of His view.... Hugs and hugs to you Suzanne! xo

Haha...I'm giggling because I just now realized how well you know Becky! I'm so jealous that you two are taking classes together haha! Your pictures are beautiful as well as always.
As I told Becky, I took a 4 week class and didn't learn much :(, but I think it was the teacher...so I now own Canon Rebel Xti for Dummies...we shall see what comes of that ;)

P.S. I spy with my little eye...something blue & handmade...you'll have to ask Becky about the one I sent her!

It is on my ever growing list to learn how to operate a good camera and of course own one. So I will be reading each week.

Thank you so much for your much appreciated input on my office. I adore you!

I so need to take a class and improve my photogrpahy. I love it when I can have an original image - and sometimes i get it....and often I don't. Lots of trial and error.

Your "homework" already looks like you'll get an A!

Beautiful, Suzanne! I use a DLSR too, but always keep a small 'point and shoot' in my purse for fun photos when I'm out and about (as in yesterdays visit to TJ's with 2 girlfriends, who willingly (?) posed for me under a lamp 'hat'. Oh the fun : )
But I got a new one for Christmas - at my request - that has a manual setting so now I can even control the aperature on it.

You are going to so enjoy your camera, and taking a class is the best idea!!!

I hope you will stop by my blog for my "Anita~Inpsired" give-away!

I am impressed, Suzanne... I don't know what any of my buttons are, I just push them all until it looks halfway decent. I suppose I should read my manual.;)

I am excited to follow your journey and learn some new things in the process.:))

Enjoy!!

Blessings,
Melanie

Years ago, I left my wonderful Nikon CoolPix in a picnic shelter (full of photos) and never saw it again. Now on my Nikon SLR, I still need help learning how to really utilize the features. So... how wonderful that you are sharing your learnings with us. Love your description of a "buttery" background!

Good girl Suzanne, try something new! I too am trying to better my photography skills.....there is a lot of practice involved, but it's fun, isn't it? BTW I am doing a Ten for Tuesdays myself, just a little list-making to collect my thoughts each week. I'm so unoriginal with that title!
Look forward to your Tuesday assignments!

Hi Suzanne, I hope everyone in your family is over that nasty flu bug. Loved your previous post on CI. Such a great cause. Congrats on the new camera. My husband just bought a new camera for his business trip to Thailand and Vietnam. Will have to check it out when he gets back. Your posts are always wonderful and will even be more special knowing that you are taking your own photos. Best wishes, Tammy

my camera's 264 page manual overwhelms me. i need small doses of how to capture images. so that i can read a little--try a lot. so, if it alright with you....i'm going to play alongside. :)

I just left a comment on Becky's, now over to you! :-)

Just like she does, you seem to really understand aperture, and I just know the rest will come easy for you, too.

My new camera is only about 1000X more complicated and intimidating than my old one, but it's really forcing me to learn lots and lots super quick.
So like I told Becks, I'm not that much farther along than you two, but I'm always willing to help....just like I was always helped by other kind souls. :-)

Have fun!

XOXO,
Anne

YAY!!!!! I am going to love these lessons!!! I have a fantastic camera and don't even know how to use it except to point and shoot!

I set my camera down once at a booth during the 2002 Olympics (which held wonderful memorable photos of the kids) and someone picked it up and walked off with it! I had had it for 17 years - I swear it was like a child to me - and I cried like a baby over the loss!!!! I totally feel your pain! :(

Yeah for you, it looks like you are duck taking to the water, Hooray! I predict you will become "part" of your camera. I have taken pics I thought I wouldn't like or use but somehow they make it into my world and make a story. Looking forward to seeing more! Hope you are feeling better, take care!

GOOD for you! I'm looking forward to hearing what you learn in your photography class. Taking one is something I have been saying I need to do for the past year. As of yet, I haven't. Maybe you'll inspire me (as you ALWAYS do) to finally take a class too!
Have fun!

Oh my! First, how awful that you lost your camera. I'm sure you were just sick. Good for you though, hanging in there and getting another and pursuing your dream. These pictures are so good. I can't imagine how good you will eventually become. How exciting. It will be fun to watch your progress.

great job and how exciting! I learned about photography back in highschool when I was yearbook editor and again in design school. I do find myself turning to my little point and shoot most often though since it's handy to carry with me everywhere. I really need to get out my good camera again. Can't wait to see more of your pics! :)

Suzanne you explained aperture beautifully. I took classes years ago...before digital, and so it has always come easy to me, but trying to explain it to my husband (who is trying to get off auto) is difficult to help him understand. I think I'll have him read your post (over and over)LOL!

How sad about your first DSLR. I have such a fear of losing mine or having it stolen. To the point that I drag my old camera with me and leave the DSLR home. I need to be brave, and realize that it can be replaced. But my cameras become my very good friends...a piece of me, and I would hate to lose it.
Your photos are just beautiful! I can't wait to hear and see more of your class projects!
hugs to you...

I'm so looking forward to following along with your lessons. I have a big girl camera and it's a hit and miss process for me. Some days I get really lucky and other days it's all a blurr. The thing that's really sad is my brother is a well-known photographer with Time-Life. I guess I didn't inherit that gene! So far the thing that has worked best for me is the lessons on dvd because I can go back and repeat anything I've forgotten. What kind of camera did you get? Let me know because I may have an extra dvd.
I love you pictures.

I love your pictures and I'm learning a lot about taking pictures. But I really loved the way you described your grandmother. My mama had Alzheimers and we never knew what age she would be on any given day. We learned much about her childhood because she never talked much about it when she was normal. Your words brought her memory back in my mind and I thank you for that. Keep up the good work.
