Going Nuts

After a weekend
of parties {and party food}
celebrating my husband's
high school class
reunion, I'm feeling
really blobby and
not particularly
energetic.

However, this week
instead of dwelling
on the
 shouldn't haves

fried food
processed food
sugary food

I want to focus
on foods that
n o u r i s h
and give
e n e r g y,
especially as we
head towards
the holidays.

The
should haves.

One thing that I
love about fall
is the abundance
of fresh nuts,
such as pecans,walnuts,
almonds and one
I especially enjoy,
the hazelnut.

Hooray for hazelnuts!

In the United States,
hazelnuts are cultivated
in two of my favorite
states, Oregon and Washington.
In the rest of the world,
they are found in commercial
quantity in Turkey and Italy.

Cousin to the Filbert,
and considered the
healthiest of nuts,
hazelnuts are high in
protein and unsaturated
fat and contain significant
amounts of thiamine and
vitamin B6.

Toasted, hazelnuts
are wonderful in granola,
tasty tossed with green beans,
olive oil and
fresh lemon juice,
and delicious in a baby
greens salad with pear
and craisins....

But this
is the way I
savor them best:

dark chocolate covered
hazelnuts

or
Nutella spread
{I just eat
it on a small spoon!}

and sometimes
 in chocolate candy,
such as this....

In moderation,
the combination of
dark chocolate
and hazelnuts can be
an energizing treat,
full of antioxidants.

{That's my story
and I'm sticking to it!}

Last October
I was introduced
to a fantastic
source for hazelnuts
of all kinds
dry roasted
dark chocolate covered
salted
spiced
diced

Hazelnut Hill,
a hazelnut orchard
near Corvallis, Oregon,
where they grow,
roast and make their
own candy with hazelnuts.

Family owned,
their hazelnuts
were fresh and delicious,
and possibly
the best that
I'd ever tasted.

Which
 nourishing foods
top your list?

Will you go
a little nuts
with me,
this fall?

Hazelnut and Chestnut
Nothing to do with
nuts except their
names,
but I couldn't
resist : )!!

Hello Suzanne!
Those little little kittens are so adorable!
Nuts: I love them! I am just a little bit lazy about opening them...;-)
Fall gives us so many special fruits: chestnuts which I usually pick in the woods that sorround my home and pumpkins, oh pumpkins, delicious, tasty pumpkins are among my favourites!

What a yummy post. I love that word, "Blobby!" Does that have midwest origins??? Just laughing, because I never heard the word "grody" either til I met my Michigan man...
ANYWAYS!.... I love nuts in my salads and like to eat the ones that seem to have the most caloric content...cashews and macadamia...
sigh... but they are something that is good for you..so yay.
Enjoyed visiting here today.
Have an outstanding Monday. Going to reunite with my honorable treasured hero this week. He is returning home after a long hot summer far away in that war-torn desert. God bless them all. Thank you for prayers whispered for Justin, Suzanne. I thank God for bringing him back to the family who loves him beyond measure! Bless you bloggy sis. Saying a prayer for your friend today.

Oh, I love hazelnuts!

I really need to eat healthier, I've been very lax in that area of late. Might explain my lack of energy and just generally blah attitude.

Thank you for the inspiration, sweet friend!

Have a wonderful week!

Anne

Hello dear friend...I also adore hazelnuts and especially with dark chocolate! I love to spread Nutella on a slice of nut or oatmeal bread. The best is when in Paris to have a crepe with Nutella...not sure which is best, the crepe or Paris!!!
I love your story and I'll stick to it too!

Oh my goodness - I am crazy about that first picture of that squirrel! I was looking for something exactly like it for the cover of a publication we put out at my work a few months back too. I found one ... not nearly as cute as the one you found! :)

I am with you on "that's my story and I'm sticking to it" ... nuts covered in chocolate - GOOD FOR YOU!!!

My daughter eats Nutella all the time and I have yet to try it. I guess it's time!

I once put candied hazelnuts atop a ganache topped chocolate cake. What? That's not healthy? Thanks for the healthy reminder though Suzanne, we ARE approaching the scary holiday baking times! The squirrel pic cracks me up! ~Lili

Hello Suzanne,

I love nuts! Almonds and hazelnuts are my favorites. Anything is better with almonds and hazelnuts! When I go to fairs, I treat myself to the paper cones filled with sugared almonds. YUM! Bad for me but YUM! I also keep almonds and hazelnuts to snack on at work. I love the squirrel and kittens photos! Too darn cute!

I discovered Nutella while living in Germany and there is nothing better than toast with nutella. Well, crepes with Nutella while walking the streets of Paris is pretty good too! I justify eating chocolate as it is a vegetable. It comes from the cocoa bean (emphasis on bean!)! :-)

Hi Suzanne,
I love nuts, all kinds of them. I do have to say that pistachios are my favorite snack, and hazelnuts a close second. I have been to the farm in Corvallis. My mom and dad took me there when I was visiting them in Oregon.
Right now my favorite healthy foods are my cherry tomatoes and cucumbers that are in my garden right now. Yum! But i'm feeling a little blobby right now too, because with the fresh peaches on, I can't seem to quit making peach pie.
I LOVE your post Suzanne. Always a great read.

Hi Suzanne!
to tell you the truth I always have a bag of almonds or nuts in my bag as a mid morning (or actually all day !) snacks! They're so good and don't make me fell guilty like chocolate does :)

I like the flavor of hazelnut, but they don't seem to be a plentiful nut in this area. Pecans seem to be what I reach for when baking--it's a southern thing. I'll certainly be on the lookout for some. By the way, I can't allow myself to even buy Nutella spread, I'm too compulsive and would eat it all by myself (not a good thing)!

Nutella/hazelnuts...oh yes! You find the most amazing place to tour that I've never heard of. Hazelnut Hill sounds like a fun place to visit. Here I am a Washingtonian & didn't even know that hazelnuts were grown there. Such a beautiful photo of the farm. Glad you two had a fun weekend. Hope this week is good to you too!

I can't resist a squirrel photo and that's one of the best!

What can't I resist? Well, nuts and cheese are favorites, and almost anything lemon! Nutella -- works for me!

On another note, I just saw a bouquet in the new Martha mag and it had Privet! I had no idea what privet really was, and it's lovely!

What a lovely post. I just read in the new Martha Stewart Magazine about a family owned Hazelnut farm/buisness. I wonder if they are the same family you are talking about??

My new favorite fall treat is apple butter. So delicious. I got the recipe off of The Farm Chicks. I made it last weekend, and we have been eating it like crazy.

What a nutty post! I eat nuts daily. Usually walnuts or almonds. But we adore Nutella at this house! A fun, long cooking item, we eat in cool weather is steel cut oatmeal. It is the healthiest variety. ♥O

You are so right - instead of focusing on what we shouldn't have, we should take advantage of the wonderfully healthy foods this great season provides. I hope the reunion was a blast. By the way, you are so not blobby :)

Thanks for the swing by. Sometimes a little madness is called for. As long as its just on occasion. I managed to keep my favorite burgers down to about 4 this summer. I love every bite! I appreciate your sweet comments, I can't manage to post something new and bury it. Sitting in a hotel in Providence after looking at RISD with daughter 2, and smiling to your sound loop.

I've got a real thing for hazelnuts too and have always been a huge peanut butter fan. I've managed to find a decent brand here in Ireland which hasn't been easy. :)
ps I'll try to get out and about to snap pics while I'm here (weather permitting which is the biggest challenge! afterall, that's how it stays so green!) xo

What a beautiful post. Love those hazelnuts too. Where I grew up, they were called filberts. I grew up in Oregon (Eugene) and this time of year, after school, I harvested them for a little extra money. I guess back in the 60's we didn't know to call them hazelnuts yet. It does sound better, doesn't it!?

Hello my friend, I too love a good nut and chocolate covered hazelnuts top the list....mmmmmmm. Plus the fat in nuts is "good" fat - and chocolate is good for you on many levels - they're a must! Love those kittens - how sweet is that photo? Enjoy the day Suzanne!
