Better Together

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy,
like art, like love.  It has no survival value;
rather, it is one of those things that give value
to survival.

~ C.S. Lewis

I flew into Chicago
last weekend
to spend precious time
with my dear friend
as she endured her
first round of

She is such a
so full of
of life
the best friend
a girl
could ever
ask for.

I also spent time with
 sweet friend Fiona ~
She has her
own story,
as well....
for another time,
another post.

Put us all together:
Me and Fiona,
Kathleen, cheering
us on....
And you have
almost 137 years
of living
and loving
between us.

Three peas in a pod
Fiona, Kathleen, Me

Despite her awe-
inspiring attitude,
Kathleen's energy
ebbed and flowed.

So, this was our
prescription, our RX,
 for her first
chemo weekend...

Fiona and I cooked
and froze seven double
batches of our go-to

You'll find one of
them, my recipe for
the most yummy and
easy soup  here.

When she felt
up to it, we fed
her comfort food,
including this.

White Truffle Mac
and Cheese, Kasey's
recipe over at Lola B's.

Kath was feeling
a bit overwhelmed
by some unfinished
projects which she's
had to set aside
during her illness.
So, Fiona and I
tackled a few hanging
jobs, including the
start of her
{special} K wall.

We sat outside
one lovely night
and talked and talked
and talked.  Great
medicine for anyone!

Her gorgeous back yard
Although Kathleen
abstained, Fiona
and I toasted her
courage as she faces
this beastly disease.

Many cups of tea
were consumed,
as well!

Not deep stuff,
but it made us
smile...and laugh!

Fashion show

{For the weeks to come.}

New hats....

And new wig...

{She rocked both looks!}

Did I mention kids?
Well, they all made
the weekend possible
for us....and we were
very grateful.

I even sneaked in
breakfast with my
sweetheart God-daughter,
Isabella ~ Fiona's oldest.

Here she is with
Kathleen's kids ~
Aren't they all

 I am six hours
away from Kathleen
and Fiona by car....
An  hour,
by plane....
But always,
close in my

I miss them,
even as I
embrace the
normal rhythm
of my own home
and family.

And I know
you understand
just what I mean.

One round
five to go.

No distance of place or lapse of time
can lessen the friendship of those
who are throughout persuaded
of each other's worth....

~ Robert Southey

PS:  Thank you for your
continued thoughts and prayers!
They continue to mean
so much to me and Kathleen.

Well, once again, you've brought me to tears...but in a good way. All my best thoughts are with your friend and her journey. I know she treasures the friendship she shares with you and Fiona. It sounds as though the two of you were just what the doctor ordered. The food looks wonderful, taking care of the undone project will make Kathleen smile everytime she sees it, and the companionship is priceless. We should all be SO lucky as to have such friendships.

Hello Suzanne,

I know how much the things you have done and are continuing to do for Kathleen mean to her. I have done the same for my mother. Kathleen will really need your support as she goes through her rounds of chemo because the effects can be debilitating. I have had six months of experience with that through my mom and it has been a rough ride. She completed her first round of radiation and chemo, had a break for a couple of weeks and has just recently completed her second round of chemo. Your love and support will help Kathleen get through the roughest hours. You are a blessing and an inspiration.

Kathleen, as well as you, continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Warmest regards,

The closeness and love of girlfriends is truly one of life's greatest gifts, isn't it? I am heading off to California in a couple of weeks and look forward to time with just me and my two best friends from middle school!

It really is nice that you could share this difficult time with Kathleen, nothing would mean more than your presence I am sure.

(That picture of you and her daughter is DARLING!!!)

Three beautiful women making memories together.

What a treat for all of us!!!! The "C" word can be scary but sounds as though your friendship and all the prayers everyone sends Kathleen's way will make the trip a much easier one.

Suzanne, I had the privilege of spending time last night with 4 friends from high school....some who I had not seen in a long, long time, as they live in Texas still. One had lost her husband to cancer last year...and when we went around and caught up on families and friends, we realized, life is real. Life can be hard. But friendships make anything and everything tolerable until it becomes truly better.
So happy you had the time with Kathleen and Fiona.
Blessings to all of you!

My dear Suzanne! THANK YOU for coming to see me even after a tiring day, but a GREAT ONE I suppose, at the event!!!! Oh, I wish I could have gone, but it was best to stay you, the last two weeks of school have been one big race and scramble to learn new things. ALL of us teachers are experiencing the TYRANNY OF THE URGENT and it is fatiguing. I was feeling pretty blue there on Friday, just thinking how I simply cannot keep up. However, my post recounts the true story of Thursday afternoon and it was an instant idea for a post. I know how busy you are, and I hope that your days become better paced as we all simply cannot and shouldn't live like this. Enjoy your Sunday dearest, and drink some of that Paris tea! Ohhhhh, we could have had a little tea party with dear Koralee, who is probably in the air as I type!

Blessings, Anita

Oh, Suzanne, Kathleen is indeed a fortunate woman in many ways to have you as a friend. To walk through this time with her will and in such a personal and truly helpful way will be far more wonderful than any flowers arriving at the door or cheery get well card. Those are good. This is great and it just fills my heart with joy to read it.

I love the idea of filling her freezer with wonderful things and doing things to help about the house -- those "I can't do it myself" things always bug us, don't they. The K wall should have an S and an F in there, too!

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and leaving such wonderful comments. This morning was a tough one -- reading your comments got my day off to a renewed start!

Suzanne, I just loved my visit to you. It is not virtual fresh air, and shouldn't be trifled with. It is the perfect rough sawn board that cracks my heart open. Life is full of trouble, and worry, but...friendship and solidarity will always elevate tragedy. You always drag me to the light, and that is the definition of a friend. You are a laser pointer, reminding us of where to dwell. We will have to pick up the phone re GC. My family is so large and spread out, somebody knows somebody. I'm glad you liked my Newf ballad. It is important to write poems.
